Ethnomusicology / West Africa

In the river villages of Upper Guinea, a three-hole flute carries centuries of history on its breath.

Known as the tambin, tambinfulé, or Fula flute, this distinctive woodwind has deep roots in Fulani musical tradition and, through centuries of cultural exchange, has come to hold an important place in Maninka musical life. Tracing that history into the Mande world, The Mande Flute is a comprehensive guide to the instrument, its songs, and the stories and cultural traditions woven through them.

Drawing on more than twenty years of fieldwork and apprenticeship in Guinea with master flutist Lanciné Condé, Dave Kobrenski brings together practical instruction, oral history, and closely documented research. More than twenty traditional songs from the Maninka repertoire are presented with historical and cultural context, lyrics and translations, playing techniques, sheet music, and companion audio recordings.

Part method book, part cultural history, and part work of remembrance, The Mande Flute offers flutists, percussionists, students, and scholars alike a richly detailed window into Mande music, memory, and oral tradition — through the voice of one remarkable instrument.
