Finding the Source: Music, Magic & Healing in West Africa

Course Description

Music, culture and storytelling combine in this unique cultural event. For two decades, author Dave Kobrenski traveled extensively in West Africa, where he was drawn ever-deeper into the music and cultural traditions of Upper Guinea. There, he found a land of ancient traditions where occult knowledge is guarded by secret societies and blacksmith artists carve sacred masks that invoke deities. There, art is magic…and it is not for the uninitiated.

Dave’s journeys brought him deep into traditions that challenged his worldview and ultimately forced him to reckon with the source of his own deteriorating health. Insightful, often moving, and always engaging, Dave’s stories are woven around skillful performances of the three-holed Fulani flute, the 12-string kamale ngoni, and the djembé.
