New Art Gallery featuring Dave Kobrenski’s West African Art and Instruments Opens in North Conway
Artist, author, and musician Dave Kobrenski is excited to announce the opening of his new gallery, which will showcase a vibrant collection of original artwork and hand-crafted musical instruments. This gallery represents a culmination of nearly two decades of Kobrenski’s travels throughout West Africa, where he immersed himself in the rich cultural and artistic traditions of the region. The opening event on Saturday, June 21, from 5 to 7 pm is set to provide a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts and the local community to experience the beauty and depth of West African culture through Kobrenski’s eyes.
The new art gallery is located within the League of NH Craftsmen Gallery building at 2526 White Mountain Hwy, North Conway, NH. It will feature twenty-five pieces of Kobrenski’s artwork, including large watercolor paintings from his first book, ‘Djoliba Crossing,’ and stunning pencil portraits from his second book, ‘Drawing on Culture.’ The gallery promises to be an inspiring space that highlights traditional Malinké culture and music, alongside portraits of the people Kobrenski has met during his travels in Guinea and Ghana.
In addition to visual art, the space also houses the Kassa Flute Co. flute workshop, where Kobrenski crafts traditional Fula flutes that ship worldwide, alongside a featured selection of high-quality musical instruments imported from West Africa. Visitors can expect to see authentic, fair-trade djembés from Guinea, and other handmade instruments such as the balafon and kamale ngoni. Kobrenski is committed to ensuring that these instruments not only represent the rich musical heritage of West Africa but also support sustainable incomes for the artists who create them.
The gallery opening event from 5-7 pm on June 21 will be open to the public and will include light refreshments along with a special musical performance by Kobrenski himself. Attendees will have the chance to experience the enchanting sounds of the West African flute, witness Kobrenski demonstrate various instruments, and have books signed by the author. Visitors can also explore the broader offerings of the League of NH Craftsmen gallery, which showcase handcrafted pottery, woodworking, prints, and more from over 300 local artists.
Dave Kobrenski expressed his enthusiasm about the opening, stating, ‘I hope to create a space where people can connect with the beauty of West African culture and music. My experiences in the region have profoundly shaped my artistic journey, and I am eager to share this with the community.’
