Black Elk was a wichasa wakhan (medicine man) of the Oglala Lakota people, and a visionary (despite being blind in his later years).
When I first read “Black Elk Speaks” in my early twenties, it stirred something deep inside me, for here was a man who bore witness to dark times of destruction and despair, but through his words and visions gave hope to his people that endures to this day. Upon re-reading it in my forties, it spoke to me on even deeper levels, for here was a deeply spiritual man who lived his life in a holy way, a model for how to be in the world, and how to live in a sacred manner.
