Study of Waterhouse’s Flora
19x24 Charcoal and pastel on toned paper
Figure drawing study. January 3, 2026
John William Waterhouse (1849–1917) was an English painter known for working first in the Academic style and for then embracing the Pre-Raphaelite style and subject matter. His paintings are known for their depictions of women from both ancient Greek mythology and Arthurian legend.
The drawing Flora is a beautiful and rare survival from the lengthy evolution of one of J.W. Waterhouse’s largest and most complex paintings, Flora and the Zephyrs (1898), depicting the Roman goddess of flowers receiving the West Wind god, Zephyr.
As part of my training, I occasionally do studies of some of my favorite artists’ work, in an effort to better understand their drawing approach and style.
